History of Potomac, MD
Potomac was settled in 1714 by Edward Offutt after he was granted a 600-acre land grant located by the Tehogee Native American Trail. The land was originally known as Offutts Crossroads, a small community that mostly served travelers and planters throughout the 18th century.
In 1881, Offutts Crossroads was renamed to Potomac by John McDonald, a Civil War veteran who settled in the area at that time. The reason behind the change in name was because postal officials requested brief names for communities, and other communities in the area also had “crossroads” in their names.
The community of Potomac experienced significant growth during the turn of the 20th century as more and more homes were built throughout the area. By the 1950s, Potomac was one of many Montgomery County communities which experienced suburbanization, transitioning from a farming community to a suburban community towards the late 20th century.
