In all of Washington, D.C.’s almost 69 square miles of total area, the Northwest quadrant is by far the liveliest, busiest, and most vibrant part of the city. It occupies the area located between the National Mall and North Capitol Street.
Often simply called Northwest, this is the largest among DC’s four quadrants and home to approximately half of the city’s population. It also serves as the home of most of the city’s iconic landmarks and attractions, such as the White House, Smithsonian, and National Zoo.

- Dupont Circle – Famed as the most beautiful neighborhood in all of Washington, D.C., Dupont Circle is an elegant enclave filled with architectural beauties. - Shaw – Shaw is as central as one can get. Coffee shops, restaurants, great shopping, and nightlife are all a short distance away from this cozy neighborhood. A lot of the residents have been living here for generations, but new people always feel welcome. The local real estate is a great mix of single-family homes, multi-family residences, row houses, apartments, lofts, and luxury condos.
- Kalorama – Divided into two neighborhoods, the Kalorama area might feel, at first glance, glitzy and glamorous. But despite the number of high-profile residents, this sophisticated part of DC is surprisingly quiet, welcoming, and definitely private. Kalorama is also home to some of DC’s most exclusive real estate, like historic mansions, row houses, and refined single-family homes.

Getting around Northwest
It’s easy to get in and around Northwest DC. There are multiple Metro lines that serve the quadrant, each with several stations spread across the area. Take note, however, that some neighborhoods in Northwest don’t have their own Metro stations. Georgetown, for instance, doesn’t have one, and the nearest stations are Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom.

- Tour the National Mall, which serves as one of the physical boundaries of Northwest DC. Several iconic DC landmarks are located here, such as the US Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the towering Washington Monument.
- Explore Rock Creek Park, one of the largest parks in all of Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1890 and is home to miles of trails, old hardwood trees, as well as attractions like the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Rock Creek Park Planetarium.
- Check out Embassy Row, where you can find international embassies housed in historic homes. The embassies regularly host special cultural events throughout the year.
